EcoVadis Boosts Supply Chain Climate Action with New Scope 3 Emissions Platform

How can a company reduce emissions it doesn’t even control?

Scope 3 emissions — those generated indirectly across a company’s value chain — remain among the most difficult to quantify and manage. These include emissions from suppliers, logistics, product use, and other upstream or downstream activities. According to many ESG reports, Scope 3 emissions often account for the largest portion of a company’s total carbon footprint.

EcoVadis launched the Carbon Data Exchange, a digital platform designed to support companies in collecting, managing, and using supplier emissions data. The initiative expands the company’s existing Carbon Action Module, enhancing data transparency in supply chain reporting.

Scope 3 Emissions and the Role of Suppliers

Unlike Scope 1 and 2 emissions, which relate to an organization’s direct operations and energy use, Scope 3 emissions are more complex to track. This is largely due to data fragmentation, inconsistent reporting practices, and the absence of a standardized collection system among suppliers.

EcoVadis’ new platform aims to address these challenges by allowing suppliers to input emissions data once and share it securely with multiple customers through a centralized network.

How the EcoVadis Scope 3 Model Functions

The Carbon Data Exchange functions as a shared data environment, connecting companies with verified supplier emissions data. It operates in coordination with the Carbon Action Module, which supports companies in engaging suppliers and tracking emissions reduction efforts.

Suppliers upload their emissions data to the Exchange, where it is made accessible to their customers through a secure, standardized format. This process is intended to reduce duplication and increase consistency across supply chain reporting.

According to EcoVadis, the system supports both upstream and downstream data sharing, enabling emissions insights to be integrated into climate disclosures, ESG reports, and emissions reduction strategies.

Partnerships and Interoperability

To enhance the platform’s functionality and compatibility with other systems, EcoVadis partnered with carbon accounting providers Normative and Sweep. These collaborations aim to improve data accuracy and interoperability, allowing companies to streamline Scope 3 data across platforms.

“Our goal is to empower companies with insights and make it easier for them to access primary supplier data exactly where they conduct their Scope 3 calculations,”said Julia Salant, General Manager, Carbon Solution at EcoVadis.“By expanding our ecosystem with partners like Sweep and Normative, we’re helping businesses to move from industry averages to primary emissions data and seamlessly bring it into their reporting and decarbonization efforts.”

EcoVadis stated that these partnerships are designed to reduce the reporting burden by making verified supplier data directly available within existing ESG and carbon calculation systems.

Features of the Carbon Data Exchange

According to EcoVadis, the platform includes several key features:

  • A centralized interface for supplier emissions data submission

  • Tools for buyers to access, review, and integrate supplier data

  • Compatibility with third-party carbon accounting platforms

  • AI-based validation mechanisms to support data consistency

EcoVadis states that the system is designed to reduce the reporting burden on suppliers while giving buyers direct access to verified Scope 3 emissions data.

Use Cases and Reporting Integration

The EcoVadis Scope 3 infrastructure is intended to assist companies in:

  • Enhancing emissions transparency across their supply chain

  • Supporting ESG reporting and climate disclosures

  • Engaging suppliers in decarbonization initiatives

  • Tracking emissions trends and hotspots

By using data shared via the Exchange, organizations can gain a clearer understanding of their value chain emissions and align them with internal sustainability goals or external reporting frameworks.

The platform is currently available to users of EcoVadis’ Carbon Action Module and is part of a broader effort to scale ESG data collection across complex global supply chains.
